Frequently Asked Questions

Will the procedure hurt?

Neither the surgical nor non-surgical abortion procedures are free from pain. Both will cause cramping similar to menstrual cramps and discomfort. To help manage these symptoms, we do offer oral sedation or twilight sedation if needed.

How long will the procedure take?

This depends on which procedure you undergo. Surgical abortion procedures actually only take between three and five minutes. The abortion pill takes a couple of hours to complete, as the medication has to take effect.

Will I be at the clinic long?

Generally, patients will need a minimum of three hours or a maximum of five hours, as we conduct ultrasounds, lab work, and additional testing before the procedure.

Will I have to miss school or work?

Usually, patients can return to work or school the next day as long as there is no heavy lifting, strenuous activity, or lengthy standing involved.

Can I drive myself home after my procedure?

You will need someone to drive you home if you have sedation. If you do not take any sedation, you are free to drive yourself home.

Can I have children in the future if I get an abortion now?

As long as you follow postoperative care guidelines following your procedure, you shouldn't have any issues conceiving in the future. Having an abortion is actually safer than a full-term delivery. However, it’s important to note that you should wait between six months to a year before trying to get pregnant if you plan to have children in the future.

Can the procedure be done in one day?

No, as of April 2022, there is a 24-hour waiting period. Patients are required to have 2 visits to have an abortion.

Do my parents have to know about my abortion?

Since July 1, 2005, the state has a “Parental Notification Law” that asserts that any minor (under 18) must have one of their parents or legal guardians notified about their plan to terminate their pregnancy. However, minors do have the option to go through a judicial bypass to avoid the parent/legal guardian notification step. With a judicial bypass, a minor can ask a judge to waive the parent/legal guardian notice, allowing the minor to proceed with the abortion without disclosing their plans to one of these parties. The judicial bypass process is completely free to minors.

Will my procedure be confidential?

Everything that you sign is confidential. This is why it’s absolutely necessary that you have a valid government ID with a picture when you come to your appointment. This helps us to ensure your confidentiality. Anyone who makes an information request on a patient before looking for records must present us with a valid government ID with a picture.
